CHARLES G. SAWTELLE As Quartermaster of the Right Grand Division of the Army of the Potomac, he arranges delivery of hospital tents on the eve of the Battle of Fredericksburg. They would soon be needed! Autograph Letter signed: "C. G. Sawtelle" as Chief Quartermaster, Right Grand Division, Army of the Potomac, 1 page, 5x8. Camp near Falmouth, Virginia, 1862 December 2. To Capt. P. P. Pilkin, Assistant Quartermaster, Belle Plain. In full: "Please deliver to ber five Sibley & two Hospital tents which I have ordered to be sent to your c. Yours respectfully". Charles Greene Sawtelle (1834-1913), a West Point graduate (1854), spent most of his military cer in quartermaster duties before, during and after the Civil War. General Ambrose Burnside had divided the Army of the Potomac into three Grand Divisions for a campaign in Virginia which he hoped would culminate in the capture of Richmond, the Confederate capital. During this campaign, Lt. Colonel Sawtelle was quartermaster of the Right Grand Division, composed of the II and IX Corps, and a cavalry division. Less than two weeks after this letter was written, Burnside, who had delayed crossing the Rappahannock River until his full army was positioned (as were by then the Confederate defenders), ordered the calamitous frontal ault on the heights commanding the town of Fredericksburg. The Right Grand Division, commanded by General Edwin Sumner, got the worst of it in a brave but suicidal ault on well-fortified Confederate positions on Marye's Heights (December 13, 1862). Union casualties at Fredericksburg (12,563) were more than twice the Confederate losses. The ratio in the battle for Marye's Heights were much worse: 8 to 1. Charles Sawtelle survived the battle, returned to staff duties at the Cavalry Bureau in Washington, and then was sent to the Western theater in 1874. He was brevetted to...
